Aus einer bischöflichen Urkunde geht hervor, dass es in Sint-Martens-Latem bereits vor 1121 eine Kirche gab. Die romanische Urform des Gebäudes lässt vermuten, dass die alte Kirche bereits aus Stein errichtet wurde. Da die Kirche am Ufer der Leie liegt, konnte der Tournai-Kalkstein leicht über die Schelde und die Leie angeliefert werden. Im Jahr 1771 wurde die Kirche gründlich umgebaut. Auf dem Friedhof liegen die Gräber des Malers Albijn Van den Abeele (1835-1918) und des Bildhauers Baron George Minne (1866-1941). Durch die Glasfenster und die Gemälde ist auch zeitgenössische Kunst in der Kirche präsent.
