Uit een bisschoppelijke oorkonde blijkt dat er in Sint-Martens-Latem al een kerkje stond voor 1121. De Romaanse oervorm van het gebouw laat vermoeden dat het oude kerkje reeds in steen was opgetrokken. Aangezien de kerk gelegen is op de Leieoever kon de Doornikse kalksteen gemakkelijk aangevoerd worden via de Schelde en de Leie. In 1771 wordt de kerk grondig verbouwd.Op het kerkhof liggen de graven van kunstschilder Albijn Van den Abeele (1835-1918) en beeldhouwer baron George Minne (1866-1941). Door de glasramen en de schilderijen is er ook hedendaagse kunst in de kerk aanwezig.
