La esclusa de Battel es una de las 5 esclusas en el canal Leuven-Dijle, también conocido como el canal de Lovaina. Originalmente, el canal contaba solo con dos esclusas, lo que provocaba inundaciones. Luego se construyeron cinco esclusas: Tildonk, Kampenhout-Sas, Boortmeerbeek, Battel y Zennegat. Entre 1836 y 1837, el canal fue adaptado para barcos con un calado de hasta 3,60 m y también se reconstruyó Kampenhout-Sas. El canal era importante para el transporte de mercancías y viajeros, pero a partir de 1837, el transporte de pasajeros disminuyó cuando se puso en servicio la línea de tren entre Lovaina y Malinas.
