El complejo de esclusas De Ganzepoot data de finales del siglo XIX. Visto desde arriba, todo tiene un plano en forma de pata de ganso. De ahí proviene el nombre.
Las compuertas o esclusas de salida del complejo permiten que los bajos polder se deshagan del agua excesiva, mientras que las esclusas regulan el nivel del agua de los canales para la navegación. Las puertas de las compuertas están cerradas en marea alta, se abren en marea baja para guiar el agua excesiva hacia el mar. Las propias esclusas se utilizan para el transbordo de barcos.
