Het sluizencomplex De Ganzepoot dateert uit het einde van de negentiende eeuw. Van bovenaf gezien heeft het geheel een grondplan in de vorm van een ganzenpoot. Vandaar komt ook de naam.
De vannen of uitlaatsluizen van het complex maken mogelijk dat de lage polders zich kunnen ontdoen van het overtollige water, terwijl de sluizen het waterpeil van de kanalen ten behoeve van de scheepvaart regelen. De deuren van de vannen zijn bij vloed gesloten, bij eb worden ze geopend om het overtollige water naar zee te loodsen. De eigenlijke sluizen worden gebruikt voor het versassen van schepen.
