En 1957, un consorcio internacional de trece países de la OCDE, en asociación con el sector privado, estableció en Dessel, Bélgica, la instalación piloto Eurochemic; una "fábrica de reprocesamiento". Esta es una fábrica para tratar el combustible nuclear usado para producir nuevo combustible nuclear. Esta instalación era para los científicos la mejor de las opciones y el paso definitivo hacia una sociedad con energía infinita hasta la eternidad. El rey Balduino inauguró personalmente la empresa en 1966. Debido a la competencia de fábricas de reprocesamiento nacionales de mayor escala, Eurochemic cerró sus puertas después de ocho años, en 1974. Francia y Gran Bretaña continuaron con el reprocesamiento de combustible nuclear. Eurochemic ha sido casi completamente desmantelado.
