Nel 1957, un consorzio internazionale di tredici paesi dell'OECD, in partnership con il settore privato, ha creato a Dessel in Belgio l'impianto pilota Eurochemic; una "fabbrica di trattamento". Questa è una fabbrica per trattare combustibile nucleare usato per trasformarlo in nuovo combustibile nucleare. Questo impianto era il fiore all'occhiello per gli scienziati e il passo definitivo verso una società con un'energia infinita fino all'eternità. Il re Baldovino venne personalmente ad inaugurare l'azienda nel 1966. A causa della concorrenza di impianti di trattamento nucleare nazionali di maggiore scala, Eurochemic chiuse dopo otto anni, nel 1974. Francia e Gran Bretagna continuarono comunque con il trattamento del combustibile nucleare. Eurochemic è ormai quasi completamente smantellato. La gestione dell'impianto di trattamento è descritta nel libro "Energia Nucleare e Trattamento" di K.G. Paulus.
