La torre está en la lista de 56 campanarios en Bélgica y Francia que han sido reconocidos como patrimonio mundial por la UNESCO.
La primera piedra del ayuntamiento se colocó en 1428. Entre 1567 y 1572 se realizaron grandes reformas. En una pintura de Hacke de 1716 también se ve un patio interior y un campanario. La construcción del tercer ayuntamiento neogótico tuvo lugar entre 1875 y 1880 según los planes del arquitecto de Brujas Louis Delacenserie, pero durante la reconstrucción después de la Primera Guerra Mundial, los arquitectos volvieron a utilizar elementos arquitectónicos tomados del estilo renacentista flamenco regional. La nueva torre del campanario resurgió en el patio como un símbolo típicamente flamenco y medieval de la libertad urbana.
