La torre è nella lista dei 56 campanili in Belgio e Francia che sono stati riconosciuti come patrimonio mondiale dall'UNESCO.
La prima pietra del municipio è stata posata nel 1428. Tra il 1567 e il 1572 sono stati effettuati grandi lavori di ristrutturazione. In un dipinto di Hacke del 1716 si può vedere anche un cortile interno e una piccola torre per la cappella. La costruzione del terzo municipio neogotico avvenne tra il 1875 e il 1880 secondo i piani dell'architetto fiammingo Louis Delacenserie, ma durante la ricostruzione dopo la Prima Guerra Mondiale gli architetti tornarono a utilizzare elementi architettonici tratti dallo stile rinascimentale fiammingo regionale. La nuova torre del campanile riemerse nel cortile come simbolo tipico fiammingo e medievale della libertà urbana.
