Der Turm steht auf der Liste der 56 Glockentürme in Belgien und Frankreich, die von der UNESCO als Weltkulturerbe anerkannt sind.
Der Grundstein des Rathauses wurde 1428 gelegt. Zwischen 1567 und 1572 fanden umfangreiche Umbauten statt. Auf einem Gemälde von Hacke aus dem Jahr 1716 sieht man auch einen Innenhof und einen Kapellturm. Der Bau des dritten neogotischen Rathauses erfolgte zwischen 1875 und 1880 nach Plänen des Brügger Architekten Louis Delacenserie, aber während des Wiederaufbaus nach dem Ersten Weltkrieg griffen die Architekten auf die architektonischen Elemente der regionalen flämischen Renaissance-Stil zurück. Der neue Glockenturm erhob sich im Innenhof als typisches flämisches und mittelalterliches Symbol städtischer Freiheit.
