Durante la guerra, Ramskapelle estaba en el frente del Yser, donde en la segunda mitad de octubre de 1914 se libró la Batalla del Yser.
Los alemanes que avanzaban intentaron cruzar el Yser y continuar hacia el oeste. Después de intensos combates, a finales de octubre, se inundó el área entre el Yser y el lecho del ferrocarril para detener a los alemanes. El 30 y 31 de octubre de 1914 todavía se luchó en Ramskapelle y los belgas y franceses pudieron reconquistar el pueblo a los alemanes.
