Entre 1930 y 1960, muchos trabajadores fronterizos de la región de Kortrijk cruzaban diariamente la frontera para trabajar en la industria textil del norte de Francia. Salían al amanecer, primero a pie, luego en bicicleta y más tarde en los autobuses y trenes especiales para trabajadores fronterizos.
En honor a esos trabajadores fronterizos y estacionales, en 1974 se inauguró junto a la autopista E3 (la actual E17) en Aalbeke "De Sjouwer". El impresionante monumento de hormigón fue diseñado por el arquitecto y escultor bruselense Jacques Moeschal, y se construyó sobre la colina artificial que surgió de la excavación de la E3. "De Sjouwer" mide 35 metros de altura y tiene cuatro puntas que representan las cuatro direcciones del viento. La punta más alta señala simbólicamente hacia Francia.
