Entre 1930 et 1960, de nombreux travailleurs frontaliers de la région de Courtrai traversaient quotidiennement la frontière pour travailler dans l'industrie textile du Nord de la France. Ils partaient à l'aube, d'abord à pied, puis à bicyclette et plus tard avec les bus et trains spéciaux pour les travailleurs frontaliers.
En l'honneur de ces travailleurs frontaliers et saisonniers, un monument appelé De Sjouwer a été inauguré en 1974 le long de l'autoroute E3 (aujourd'hui E17) à Aalbeke. Le monument impressionnant en béton a été conçu par l'architecte et sculpteur bruxellois Jacques Moeschal, et a été construit sur la colline artificielle créée lors du creusement de l'E3. De Sjouwer mesure 35 mètres de haut et possède quatre pointes symbolisant les quatre points cardinaux. La plus grande pointe indique symboliquement la direction de la France.
