De las cuatro especies de salamandras de agua que tenemos en Flandes, la salamandra con cresta es la que más despierta la imaginación. Nuestra mayor salamandra de agua está además protegida a nivel europeo. En Wellen, el 'dragón de agua' todavía se encuentra en cuatro zonas. Una de esas zonas es el área natural De Grote Beemd. Limburgs Landschap vzw ha creado en los últimos años una red de charcas en De Grote Beemd. Con suerte, esto les permitirá volver a expandirse en el futuro por el valle de Herk. Un paisaje a pequeña escala con charcas o estanques sin peces, setos, bordes de bosques, cañaverales y filas de árboles tronchados forman el hábitat ideal para esta especie.
