Sobre la fecha exacta en que se construyó el primer ayuntamiento, no hay claridad. El actual ayuntamiento no es, sin duda, el primer ayuntamiento. Este edificio se encuentra en la Grand Place, que desde la destrucción de la ciudad en 1635 se ha convertido en el nuevo centro de Tienen. Fue originalmente construido en hermoso estilo renacentista flamenco. En el siglo XVI, era propiedad de la familia Immens. En 1712, la ciudad compró el edificio.
La hermosa fachada fue demolida en 1836-37 según los planes de K.L. Drossart. En su lugar, se construyó una fachada maciza, sustentada por seis columnas corintias macizas y un gigantesco cornisa. En la nueva fachada se instalaron nichos en los que se exhiben los bustos de los pintores Van Dyck, Rubens y Coebergher, junto a Carlos V, Vesalio, Grétry y Justus Lipsius.
