Sulla data esatta in cui è stato costruito il primo municipio non c'è chiarezza. L'attuale municipio non è certamente il primo municipio. Questo edificio si trova nella Grande Piazza, che è diventata il nuovo centro di Tienen dopo la distruzione della città nel 1635. Fu originariamente eretto in elegante stile rinascimentale fiammingo. Nel 16° secolo era di proprietà della famiglia Immens. Nel 1712 la città acquistò l'edificio.
La splendida facciata fu demolita nel 1836-37 secondo i piani di K.L. Drossart. Al suo posto è stata costruita una facciata massiccia, sorretta da sei massicce colonne corinzie e una gigantesca cornice. Nella nuova facciata furono inserite delle nicchie in cui sono collocati i busti dei pittori Van Dyck, Rubens e Coebergher, accanto a Carlo V, Vesalio, Grétry e Giusto Lipsio.
