Sobre todo, el Handzamebroek (entre Barisdam y Handzame), donde el Handzamevaart aún serpentea o meandrea, ejerce una fuerte atracción sobre las aves acuáticas y los limícolas. Esta área no está bajo la influencia directa de las estaciones de bombeo y aún se inunda con bastante regularidad en una superficie de varias decenas de hectáreas. El valle es mucho más que un área de invernada para la fauna acuática. También es un área valiosa para numerosas aves rapaces.
