El castillo fortificado de Écaussinnes es una joya medieval. Tenía una ubicación estratégica en un lugar vadeable junto al Sennette, que separaba el condado de Henao y el ducado de Brabante. Fue construido en el siglo XII sobre una ladera rocosa de la formación de caliza Lalaing (LAL). Como podemos ver en la foto, esta caliza tiene una estructura de pizarra, es arcillosa y rica en fósiles.
