Por primera vez, el municipio fue llamado a principios del siglo XIV Frickenhusen. La principal fuente de ingresos era el cultivo de vino. Sin embargo, las epidemias, las guerras y las malas cosechas hicieron que los ingresos fueran volátiles, por lo que muchas personas trabajaron a partir de mediados del siglo XVIII en el tejido, el hilado y el lino.
Desde la Reforma, Frickenhausen es predominantemente protestante. Hoy en día hay una iglesia protestante en cada una de las tres partes municipales. En el centro también hay una iglesia católica romana y desde hace varios años una congregación Nueva Apostólica.
