Brüggen se encuentra al norte de Alfeld, entre los parques naturales de Weserbergland y Harz a orillas del Leine. Al este y sureste de Brüggen se elevan las Sieben Berge.
Las antiguas denominaciones del lugar son 936 Brugheim, 954 Brugkihem, 955 Brugkiem, 965 Bruggeheim, 997 Bruggihem, 1004 Bruggeheim, 1210 Brugehem, 1220 Brucchem, 1226 Bruken y 1216 Brucken. A pesar de algunas variantes, la forma básica del nombre del lugar es fácilmente reconocible. El nombre consiste en una composición de "bruggi" para puente y "-hem" para hogar. Por lo tanto, Brüggen significa hogar/asentamiento en el puente.
