Brüggen si trova a nord di Alfeld, tra i parchi naturali Weserbergland e Harz lungo il fiume Leine. A est e sud-est di Brüggen si ergono le Sette Montagne.
Le antiche denominazioni del luogo sono 936 Brugheim, 954 Brugkihem, 955 Brugkiem, 965 Bruggeheim, 997 Bruggihem, 1004 Bruggeheim, 1210 Brugehem, 1220 Brucchem, 1226 Bruken e 1216 Brucken. Nonostante alcune varianti, la forma base del nome del luogo è ben riconoscibile. Il nome è composto da "bruggi" per ponte e "-hem" per casa. Pertanto, Brüggen significa casa/insediamento al ponte.
