La familia von der Pahlen es una familia rusa, lituana y sueca de origen germano-báltico. Presumiblemente, la familia procedía de Pomerania, pero se trasladó a Livonia a principios del siglo XV. La primera mención conocida de la familia se data en el año 1120, cuando un Johannes de Pala era gobernador de Riga.
El 18 de septiembre de 1679, cinco hermanos de la familia con sus descendientes fueron elevados por el rey Carlos XI de Suecia a la nobleza hereditaria. En 1799, el zar Pablo elevó a Pedro Luis von der Pahlen al estado de conde. A través de decisiones del gobierno ruso de 1755 y 1865, la mayoría de los demás miembros de la familia Pahlen fueron elevados al estado de nobles del imperio ruso.
