El Wartenberg se encuentra a unos cuatro kilómetros al oeste de Calbe en Sajonia-Anhalt; con 121 metros es la elevación natural más alta de la parte sur de la Börde de Magdeburgo. Pertenece a un sistema de morrenas que forma la línea divisoria entre la llanura aluvial del Elba-Saale en el valle de glaciación de Breslau-Magdeburgo y la Börde de Magdeburgo.
Los hallazgos de la Edad de Bronce sugieren que el Wartenberg era un importante lugar de enterramiento y santuario para los germanos que vivían allí en ese entonces.
