Il Wartenberg si trova a circa quattro chilometri a ovest di Calbe, in Sassonia-Anhalt; con i suoi 121 metri è l'elevazione naturale più alta nella Bassa Magdeburgo meridionale. Fa parte di una catena di morene terminali che forma il confine tra l'area Elba-Saale nel letto primordiale di Breslavia-Magdeburgo e la Bassa Magdeburgo.
Dai ritrovamenti dell'età del bronzo si può dedurre che il Wartenberg fosse un importante luogo di sepoltura e santuario per i Germani che vi vivevano all'epoca.
