En la iglesia de Georgenkirche, fundada por Ludwig III a finales del siglo XII, se casó la hija húngara de 14 años del rey, Elizabeth, con Ludwig IV. Aquí es donde Martin Luther cantó como estudiante en el coro, y más tarde predicó en esta iglesia, justo antes de ser llevado a la Wartburg para su protección. Durante más de 132 años, miembros de la familia de Johann Sebastian Bach hicieron música en el banco del órgano de su capilla de bautismo. El Wartburgfest (festival de Wartburg) de la hermandad en 1817 comenzó aquí, al igual que las oraciones por la paz en 1989.
