In de Georgenkirche, opgericht door Ludwig III aan het einde van de 12e eeuw, trouwde de 14-jarige Hongaarse dochter van de koning, Elizabeth, met Ludwig IV. Dit is waar Martin Luther als student in het koor zong, later preekte hij in deze kerk, net voordat hij ter bescherming naar de Wartburg werd gebracht. Meer dan 132 jaar maakten leden van de familie van Johann Sebastian Bach muziek op de orgelbank van zijn doopkapel. Het Wartburgfest (Wartburg festival) van de broederschap in 1817 begon hier, net als de gebeden voor vrede in 1989.
