El Nuevo Jardín es un área de parque de 102,5 hectáreas que limita al norte de Potsdam con el Lago Sagrado y el Lago de las Doncellas. Federico Guillermo II ordenó, a partir de 1787, la creación de un nuevo jardín en este terreno, que debía diferenciarse del parque barroco de Sanssouci.
Durante su tiempo como príncipe heredero, Federico Guillermo II adquirió la propiedad de un comerciante junto al Lago Sagrado, que fue ampliada con la compra de huertos y viñedos adyacentes a lo largo del tiempo. Un año después de asumir el poder, comenzaron los trabajos en la instalación. El parque debía reflejar una imagen arquitectónicamente moderna, acorde con el espíritu de la época, y diferenciarse de las formas anticuadas del antiguo jardín ornamental y productivo de Sanssouci de Federico el Grande; la denominación de Nuevo Jardín se refiere programáticamente a esto.
