Il Nuovo Giardino è un'area verde di 102,5 ettari che si estende a nord di Potsdam, al confine con il Lago Sacro e il Lago delle Vergini. Federico Guglielmo II iniziò nel 1787 la creazione di un nuovo giardino in quest'area, che doveva distinguersi dal parco barocco di Sanssouci.
Già durante il suo periodo da erede al trono, Federico Guglielmo II acquistò il terreno di un commerciante sul Lago Sacro, che nel corso del tempo fu ampliato con l'acquisto di frutteti e vigneti circostanti. Un anno dopo il suo insediamento, iniziarono i lavori per la creazione del giardino. Il parco doveva riflettere un'immagine architettonica del giardino moderna, in linea con lo spirito del tempo, e doveva differenziarsi dalle forme superate del vecchio giardino ornamentale e produttivo di Sanssouci di Federico il Grande; la denominazione Nuovo Giardino si riferisce programmaticamente a questo.
