El Lonetal se encuentra entre Stuttgart y Múnich en el distrito de Alb-Donau y en el distrito de Heidenheim, Baden-Württemberg. El arroyo que da nombre al valle, el Lone, nace en Urspring y desemboca después de 30 kilómetros en Hürben en el Hürbe, que afluye al Brenz. Dado que el Lone lleva agua raramente en grandes trechos, el Lonetal es uno de los valles secos más largos de Alemania. En 2006, se le otorgó el reconocimiento como uno de los 77 geotopos nacionales más significativos en Alemania.
Las áreas de talud están generalmente libres de vegetación leñosa y están dominadas por una caña de brillo de cañaveral. La amplia llanura se utiliza como pradera intensiva. Las laderas del valle están casi en su totalidad cubiertas de bosques.
