La Lonetal si trova tra Stoccarda e Monaco nel circondario di Alb-Donau e nel distretto di Heidenheim, nel Baden-Württemberg. Il ruscello che dà il nome, la Lone, ha origine a Urspring e sfocia, dopo 30 chilometri, a Hürben nel fiume Hürbe, che confluisce nel Brenz. Poiché la Lone porta acqua solo raramente su ampie sezioni, la Lonetal è una delle valli secche più lunghe della Germania. Nel 2006 è stata quindi classificata come uno dei 77 geotopi nazionali più significativi in Germania.
Le aree di riva sono per lo più prive di arbusti e sono dominate da un giunco di erba a canna. La vasta pianura è utilizzata come terreno agricolo intensivo. Le pendici della valle sono quasi ovunque boscose.
