El castillo de Wittgenstein se encuentra entre el Lahn y el Laasphebach, por encima de la ciudad de Bad Laasphe en Renania del Norte-Westfalia, en una montaña de 470 m de altura.
Una fortaleza en este lugar se menciona por primera vez en 1187 como "Widenkindigstein". Antes, en 1174, un conde Werner I se había nombrado en honor al castillo, que por lo tanto debe haber existido. Actualmente no hay pruebas de un establecimiento más antiguo; quizás el castillo fue fundado a mediados del siglo XII por un miembro de la casa de los condes de Reichenbach/Ziegenhain y más tarde pasó a manos del conde Werner I, quien lo utilizó para establecer un dominio independiente.
