Le château de Wittgenstein est situé entre les rivières Lahn et Laasphebach au-dessus de la ville de Bad Laasphe en Rhénanie-du-Nord-Westphalie, sur une montagne de 470 m d’altitude.
Un château sur ce site a été mentionné pour la première fois dans un document en 1187 sous le nom de « Widenkindigstein ». Auparavant, en 1174, le comte Werner I s’était nommé lui-même d’après le château, qui devait exister à cette époque. Il n’y a actuellement aucune preuve d’une fondation plus ancienne ; peut-être le château a-t-il été construit vers le milieu du 12ème siècle par un membre de la maison comtale de Reichenbach/Ziegenhain et est-il tombé un peu plus tard entre les mains du comte Werner I, qui l’a utilisé pour construire un domaine indépendant.
