El castillo de Liebenwerda, es decir, el Schloss Liebenwerda en el actual Bad Liebenwerda, fue construido alrededor de principios del siglo XIII y existió tras varios incendios y renovaciones hasta finales del siglo XIX. Se construyó en el marco de la colonización alemana del este junto a otros castillos a lo largo del río Elster Negro.
Cuándo se construyó realmente el castillo no ha sido científicamente confirmado hasta ahora. Probablemente se construyó al mismo tiempo que la torre de la fortaleza conservada alrededor de 1207, durante la expansión territorial, también conocida como la colonización alemana del este. En unas pocas décadas se construyeron en Mückenberg, Elsterwerda, Saathain, Würdenhain, Wahrenbrück y Uebigau seis castillos más en la orilla izquierda del Elster Negro, que presentaban torres similares o de diseño idéntico.
