Het kasteel Liebenwerda, respectievelijk het Slot Liebenwerda in de huidige Bad Liebenwerda, werd ongeveer aan het begin van de 13e eeuw gebouwd en bleef bestaan na meerdere branden en verbouwingen tot het einde van de 19e eeuw. Het werd gebouwd in het kader van de Duitse oostkolonisatie naast andere kastelen langs de loop van de Zwarte Elster.
Wanneer het kasteel precies is ontstaan, is tot nu toe wetenschappelijk niet vastgesteld. Vermoedelijk is het gelijktijdig met de bewaard gebleven donjon ontstaan rond 1207, tijdens de uitbouw van het land, ook wel de Duitse oostkolonisatie genoemd. Binnen enkele decennia ontstonden in Mückenberg, Elsterwerda, Saathain, Würdenhain, Wahrenbrück en Uebigau zes andere kastelen aan de linkeroever van de Zwarte Elster, die vergelijkbare of bouwgelijke torens hadden.
