Il castello di Liebenwerda, o il palazzo di Liebenwerda, nell'attuale Bad Liebenwerda, fu costruito all'incirca all'inizio del XIII secolo e rimase in piedi, dopo diversi incendi e ristrutturazioni, fino alla fine del XIX secolo. Sorse nel quadro della colonizzazione tedesca verso est accanto ad altri castelli lungo il corso della Schwarze Elster.
Quando il castello sia effettivamente sorto non è ancora scientificamente accertato. Presumibilmente, fu costruito contemporaneamente al mastio conservato intorno al 1207, durante l'espansione territoriale, nota anche come colonizzazione tedesca verso est. Nel giro di pochi decenni, sorsero a Mückenberg, Elsterwerda, Saathain, Würdenhain, Wahrenbrück e Uebigau sei ulteriori castelli sulla riva sinistra della Schwarze Elster, che mostrano torri simili o architetture identiche.
