Bösenrode se encuentra entre el Südharz y la cordillera de Kyffhäuser, a orillas de la Thyra, sobre la cual pasa cerca el puente Thyratal de la autopista federal 38. Abajo, en la llanura de Helme, se encuentran tierras agrícolas valiosas, la línea de tren de Halle a Nordhausen y la carretera estatal 3080.
El pueblo de Bösenrode fue mencionado por primera vez en un documento en 1274. La mención de 1228 se refiere a la mención de un nombre de persona en una representación cronística del siglo XVI. En 1604, ciudadanos de Berga, Görsbach, Schwenda, Uftrungen, Rosperwenda, Thürungen y Bösenrode rescataron a un hijo del conde de Stolberg. Por esta acción, recibieron el bosque de Siete Comunidades, que hoy en día gestionan de nuevo de forma conjunta.
