Bösenrode si trova tra il Sudharz e il Kyffhäusergebirge, lungo la Thyra, sopra la quale passa il ponte Thyratal dell'autostrada federale 38. Nella pianura di Helmeniederung si trovano terreni agricoli preziosi, la linea ferroviaria da Halle a Nordhausen e la strada statale 3080.
Il villaggio di Bösenrode viene menzionato per la prima volta in un documento nel 1274. La menzione del 1228 si riferisce a un riferimento a un nome di persona in una cronaca del 16° secolo. Nel 1604, cittadini di Berga, Görsbach, Schwenda, Uftrungen, Rosperwenda, Thürungen e Bösenrode salvarono un figlio del conte di Stolberg. Per questo atto ricevettero il bosco delle Sette Comuni, che oggi coltivano nuovamente insieme.
