Este portal fue construido a finales del siglo II (alrededor del 180 d.C.) por los romanos. Es la puerta norte de la ciudad. El bien conservado portal (treinta y seis metros de ancho, treinta metros de alto) era parte de una muralla de ciudad de seis kilómetros de largo. Es el recuerdo más destacado de la época romana. Su nombre "Puerta Negra" se debe a la arenisca desgastada por el tiempo.
