Cette porte a été construite à la fin du deuxième siècle (vers 180 après J.-C.) par les Romains. C'est la porte nord de la ville. La porte bien conservée (trente-six mètres de large, trente mètres de haut) faisait partie d'un mur d'enceinte de six kilomètres de long. C'est le souvenir le plus manifeste de l'époque romaine. Elle doit son nom de « Porte Noire » à son grès érodé.
