La ruina del castillo de Virneburg es la ruina de un castillo de altura en una cumbre de pizarra a 430 m, rodeado por el Nitzbach, sobre el municipio homónimo en el distrito de Mayen-Koblenz en Renania-Palatinado.
El castillo fue probablemente construido en la segunda mitad del siglo XII como feudo de los condes palatinos. La primera mención del castillo se encuentra en un documento del año 1192, en el que los hermanos Gottfried y Friedrich de Virneburg transfirieron su castillo "Vernenburgh" junto con el condado y todos los anexos como feudo al arzobispo Johann I de Tréveris. Este documento no se ha conservado en su forma original, y la copia del siglo XVI contiene formulaciones que no eran habituales alrededor del 1200, lo que lo convierte en una transmisión errónea o una falsificación.
