Brempt fue mencionado por escrito ya en 1136. Los señores de Brempt forman uno de los linajes más antiguos de Renania.
Brempt se encuentra en el valle del Swalm, cerca del lago Hariksee. Este lago, que es alimentado por el Swalm, tiene miles de años, pero ha adquirido su forma actual debido a la extracción de turba. Más abajo se encuentra el Mühlrather Mühle, un molino de agua con dos ruedas. El lago también es importante para el recreo: junto al Insel-Schlösschen hay un restaurante con terraza.
