Brempt est mentionné par écrit depuis 1136. Les seigneurs de Brempt forment l'une des plus anciennes familles rhénanes.
Brempt se trouve dans la vallée de la Swalm, près du Hariksee. Ce lac, qui est alimenté par la Swalm, a des milliers d'années, mais a pris sa forme actuelle en raison de l'extraction de tourbe. En aval se trouve encore le Mühlrather Mühle, un moulin à eau avec deux roues. Le lac est également important pour les loisirs : à côté de l'Insel-Schlösschen se trouve un restaurant avec une terrasse.
