La actual casa de teatro fue construida a finales del siglo XIX, como un reemplazo del viejo teatro, apodado "Svedekassen". Dado que Aarhus había crecido hasta convertirse en la ciudad más grande de Jutlandia durante el siglo XIX, el viejo teatro se había vuelto demasiado pequeño para satisfacer la demanda pública. Un nuevo edificio fue diseñado por el arquitecto danés Hack Kampmann, y la construcción comenzó el 12 de agosto de 1898. Solo dos años después, el Teatro de Aarhus estaba completo y fue inaugurado el 15 de septiembre de 1900.
