La herencia cultural de la ciudad de Teruel, que tiene cierta influencia islámica, incluye cuatro iglesias en el sitio del Patrimonio Mundial de la UNESCO Arquitectura Mudéjar de Aragón. Teruel es conocida por su clima riguroso, su jamón serrano, su cerámica y sus famosas Fiestas (La vaquilla del ángel durante el segundo fin de semana de julio y "Bodas de Isabel de Segura" alrededor del tercer fin de semana de febrero). Teruel fue objeto de disputas en la Guerra Civil Española y sufrió mucha destrucción. La Batalla de Teruel en diciembre de 1937-febrero de 1938 fue una de las más sangrientas de la guerra. La ciudad cambió de manos varias veces, cayendo primero en manos de los republicanos y siendo finalmente recuperada por los nacionalistas.
