Das kulturelle Erbe der Stadt Teruel, das einige islamische Einflüsse aufweist, umfasst vier Kirchen im UNESCO-Weltkulturerbe der Mudéjar-Architektur von Aragon. Teruel ist bekannt für sein raues Klima, seinen Jamón Serrano (luftgetrockneter Schinken), seine Töpferei und seine berühmten Festlichkeiten (La vaquilla del ángel am zweiten Juli-Wochenende und "Bodas de Isabel de Segura" um das dritte Februar-Wochenende). Teruel wurde während des Spanischen Bürgerkriegs umkämpft und erlitt viele Zerstörungen. Die Schlacht von Teruel von Dezember 1937 bis Februar 1938 war eine der blutigsten des Krieges. Die Stadt wechselte mehrmals den Besitzer, fiel zunächst in die Hände der Republikaner und wurde schließlich von den Nationalisten zurückerobert.
