De culturele erfenis van de stad Teruel, die enige islamitische invloed heeft, omvat vier kerken in de UNESCO Werelderfgoedlocatie Mudéjar-architectuur van Aragon. Teruel staat bekend om zijn barre klimaat, zijn jamón serrano (gedroogde ham), zijn aardewerk en zijn beroemde Fiestas (La vaquilla del ángel tijdens het tweede weekend van juli en "Bodas de Isabel de Segura" rond het derde weekend van februari). Teruel werd bevochten in de Spaanse Burgeroorlog en leed veel vernietiging. De Slag om Teruel in december 1937-februari 1938 was een van de bloedigste van de oorlog. De stad wisselde meerdere keren van handen, eerst viel ze in handen van de Republikeinen en werd uiteindelijk heroverd door de Nationalisten.
