Nos encontramos ante uno de los hospitales fundados en época de los Reyes Católicos en Málaga y es uno de los tres más antiguos en su categoría a nivel español . El edificio fue construido en 1505 por Diego García de Hinestrosa en los terrenos que les regalara los Monarcas. Hinestrosa fue un caballero noble que fundó el hospital como una institución caritativa. Antes del terremoto de 1884, el edificio era de estilo gótico-mudéjar, pero hubo que derribarlo para reconstruirlo inspirándose en su estilo constructivo. Se conservó la capilla, así como los artesanados y las obras de arte que atesoraba. Se especializó en tratamientos de enfermedades oculares . Se encuentra a la espera de abrir como museo catedralicio .
