El bombardeo de Guernica fue un ataque aéreo realizado sobre población civil de esta localidad vasca el 26 de abril de 1937, en el transcurso de la guerra civil española, por parte de la Legión Cóndor alemana y la Aviación Legionaria italiana, que combatían en favor del bando sublevado contra el gobierno de la Segunda República Española. Las estimaciones de víctimas cifran los fallecidos en un rango que abarca de los 120 a los 300 muertos.[1] Sin embargo, Xabier Irujo, codirector del Center for Basque Studies de la Universidad de Nevada y autor de un reciente estudio sobre el tema, ha elevado la cifra de muertos a alrededor de 2000.[2][3][4][5]
