El monumento es obra del escultor valenciano Manuel Boix y fue inaugurado el 19 de septiembre de 1997. La escultura rinde homenaje al homenaje de Jerez a la persona que hizo grande la industria del jerez al mismo tiempo que impulsaba las mejoras sociales en la comunidad de Jerez.
Manuel María González Ángel nació en Sanlúcar de Barrameda en 1812 y murió en Jerez en 1887.
Se instaló en Jerez en 1835 con 23 años y fundó en Jerez la actual empresa bodeguera González Byass . Asesorado por su tío José , le dio el nombre a la famosa marca y buque insignia de la empresa: TIO PEPE .
Manuel María logró convertirse en el primer exportador de vinos de Jerez . Fundó varias instituciones comerciales importantes y colaboró en muchas otras empresas, entre ellas el ferrocarril de Sanlúcar a Bonanza.
