Il monumento è opera dello scultore valenciano Manuel Boix ed è stato inaugurato il 19 settembre 1997. La scultura rende omaggio al tributo di Jerez alla persona che ha reso grande l' industria dello sherry promuovendo al contempo miglioramenti sociali nella comunità di Jerez.
Manuel María González Ángel nacque a Sanlúcar de Barrameda nel 1812 e morì a Jerez nel 1887.
Si stabilì a Jerez nel 1835 all'età di 23 anni e fondò l'attuale azienda vinicola González Byass a Jerez. Consigliato dallo zio José , diede il nome al famoso marchio e fiore all'occhiello dell'azienda: TIO PEPE .
Manuel María è riuscito a diventare il primo esportatore di vini sherry . Fondò diverse importanti istituzioni commerciali e collaborò in molte altre compagnie, tra cui la ferrovia da Sanlúcar a Bonanza.
